Teacher's Choice
Here are some of the books that your teachers specifically recommend. And the reasons why!

Holes is a fantastic book to study, for a number of reasons. The plot is original, unpredictable, humourous and very cleverly put together. So it is enjoyable to read, first and foremost.
In addition the dialogue used is a very good representation of the way English is spoken today. So if you prefer to learn a more colloquial, conversational type of English, the book could be ideal for you.
It is very difficult for young readers to appreciate classic literature, as the plots tend to be slower and less action-driven. Treasure Island however is the perfect book for getting young readers started on classic lit, since the plot is exciting, and the characters are more accessible, and relatable.
However, as with all classics, a high level of English is required if one is to read it, and fully appreciate it. In addition, the reader must be able to translate the obscure dialects of certain characters.

Almost any Roald Dahl book could have made this list. Each and every one is just pure enjoyment. His characters are always extremely memorable, and the plots outrageous.
The language used by Dahl is always playful, and is filled with idioms and similes, rhyme and alliteration, onomatopoeias and more. They are the perfect books to get a young reader into recognising figurative language, and hopefully inspire them to start using it themselves.
Matilda is our recommended choice for Dahl, because the settings (home and school), and the main character's struggles (parents and teachers), are all very relatable for young readers!
